5 questions for Carlos Pizzorno, famous uruguayan winemaker from Bodega Pizzorno

1) Do you remember your first encounter with the drink of Gods? When it was and what linked your fate with wine?

It was at the early age. We used to live with my parents and my grandparents (Francisco and Margarita). They came from Italy and they always drink red wine with meals. That is I started to drink little red wine mixed with water. They always said the red wine is like a” medicine”. The family winery was founded in 1910. I grew up near the winery so I worked with my father since I was very young mainly at the harvest time.

2) What is it that fascinates and attracts you most in wine?

Like an oenologist the most attractive is that we could plant our own vineyard, have our own grapes, and then elaborate the wine we want to have. When we are pruning, we are thinking the kind of wine we want to elaborate. That is fascinating! I take care to the vineyard by myself under the support of an agronomist engineer. Also we have the support of a consultant winemaker from New Zealand: Duncan Killiner. We can meet and know a lot of people beyond a bottle of wine, it is not only business...

3) What makes you worry most in today's world of wine?

That it is very often to find big industrial wineries with millions of litres of production managed by multinationales where the quality of the wines has been losen and little by little there are less small wineries with passion and tradition. Lukely in Uruguay most of the wineries are familiar companies.

4) What unique unmistakables features of your wines are you proud of?

We can elaborate limited productions of high quality wines, rich in fruit due we have a maritime climate and we are exporting to important markets such are: USA, Canada, U.K., Germany, Netherland, Finland and we hope to be promptly in Czech.

5) You may take with you two bottles of wine to a desert island . One of your production and one of your competitors'. Which do you choose?

Of our own production Pizzorno Reserve 2004. Of our competitors: Pisano AretXea
